Mulberry Silk Benefits
Mulberry Silk Benefits
Why mulberry silk & why it matters:
- 100% Pure Mulberry Silk — Not "Silk-Feel." Not Satin. Silk. Grade 6A mulberry silk — the highest grading in the industry — is produced from silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves. The result is a fibre with a uniform, long-strand structure that creates the unmistakable lustre and softness that synthetic alternatives spend their entire existence trying to imitate.
- Breathable & Thermoregulating — Year-Round Comfort: Natural silk adapts to its environment. Cool and refreshing in summer, quietly warm in winter. Unlike polyester or synthetic covers that trap heat and hold it against you, silk regulates — keeping cushions and sofas comfortable for every season, every use.
- Hypoallergenic — The Natural Choice for Sensitive Skin: Silk's natural protein structure is inherently resistant to dust mites, mould and common allergens. If you have sensitive skin, eczema, or have ever woken up from a sofa nap with irritated skin — your cushion cover may be the reason. Mulberry silk is not.
- Gentle on Hair & Skin — Wherever You Rest: Most people think of silk pillowcases for hair and skin benefits. Fewer realise that a silk cushion cover on a sofa, reading chair or daybed offers exactly the same benefits — less friction, less breakage, less overnight crease — whenever you rest against it. It is the same Grade 6A charmeuse as our pillowcases. The benefit is identical.
- Luminous Sheen That Changes With the Light: Charmeuse silk catches and shifts light in a way that velvet, cotton and linen simply cannot. The same cushion looks ivory-soft in morning light and deep and jewel-like by lamplight. This is the quality that makes a room look designed — not just decorated.
- An Investment That Holds Its Value: At the price of a good dinner out, a Jass London silk cushion cover lasts for years with proper care - growing softer with each gentle wash, not thinner or rougher. It is the kind of purchase that feels indulgent the first time and obvious every time after that.

Silk Care Guide
Silk Care Guide
Silk is a natural protein fibre - closer in composition to your hair than to any synthetic fabric. The right care preserves its softness, sheen and hypoallergenic properties for years. The wrong care takes weeks to undo.
Machine Washing - Delicate Cycle
- Turn inside-out before washing - this protects the lustrous face of the silk from drum friction.
- Use a mesh laundry bag - an essential step that prevents snagging against other fabrics or the machine drum.
- Choose your detergent carefully - use a pH-neutral, enzyme-free liquid detergent made for silk or wool. Avoid biological detergents, bleach, fabric softeners and products with optical brighteners, these degrade silk protein at the fibre level.
- Cold water, 30°C maximum - select the delicate, silk or handwash cycle. Wash silk separately from heavy fabrics such as denim, towels or anything with zips or hooks.
Hand Washing - Recommended
- Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water. Add a small amount of silk detergent and dissolve gently before submerging.
- Agitate gently by hand — do not rub, scrub or wring. The motion should feel more like a massage than a wash. Soak for no longer than 3–5 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly in cool, clean water until every trace of detergent has gone. Soap residue left in silk fibres attracts dirt and dulls the sheen over time.
Drying
- Never wring or twist - gently squeeze excess water, or roll the cushion cover in a clean white towel and press to absorb moisture.
- Air dry flat or hanging in a shaded, well-ventilated space. Direct sunlight degrades silk protein and causes colour to fade, even one or two hours of strong UV exposure causes damage that is irreversible.
- Never tumble dry - the heat and mechanical action of a dryer will permanently damage the fibre structure.
Ironing & Storage
- Iron while slightly damp if needed - use the lowest silk setting and iron on the reverse (inside-out) side. A pressing cloth between the iron and the silk adds an extra layer of protection.
- Store folded in a breathable fabric bag - away from direct light, damp and strong scents. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and can cause yellowing over time.
Longevity tip
With these simple steps, your Jass London silk will last two to three years of regular use - often longer. Many of our customers have been using the same pieces for three years and counting. The key is consistent care: cool water, gentle detergent, and air drying. Nothing complicated.
⚠ Never use biological detergents, bleach or fabric softeners on silk. These break down the natural sericin protein that gives silk its hypoallergenic and moisture-regulating properties and the damage is permanent.

Mulberry Silk Cushion Covers FAQs
What is Grade 6A mulberry silk?
Grade 6A is the highest purity classification for mulberry silk. It means the silk has been reeled from the finest, most uniform cocoons, producing the longest, smoothest and most lustrous fibres available. Most mass-market products use Grade A or Grade 3A silk. Jass London uses only Grade 6A mulberry silk across every pillowcase and cushion cover – which is why the drape, smoothness and durability are noticeably superior to what you find at lower price points.
Is a mulberry silk pillowcase good for your hair?
Yes, and the mechanism is straightforward. Cotton pillowcases have microscopic rough fibres that catch your hair as you move during sleep, creating friction that causes breakage, split ends and frizz. Grade 6A mulberry silk has an exceptionally smooth surface that lets hair glide without resistance. The result: less breakage, significantly less morning frizz, and longer-lasting blowouts and styles. The benefits are especially noticeable for curly, wavy, colour-treated or chemically processed hair. Most customers report visible improvement within two to four weeks of switching.
Is a silk pillowcase good for your skin?
Yes. Silk offers two key skin benefits cotton cannot match. First, the smooth surface dramatically reduces friction, meaning less mechanical stress on facial skin overnight – a contributing factor to sleep creases and, over time, wrinkle formation. Second, unlike cotton, silk does not absorb moisture from your skin. Cotton wicks hydration and skincare away from your face while you sleep; silk leaves them where they belong. For skin prone to sensitivity, redness or breakouts, silk's hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating properties make it a genuinely gentler overnight surface.
What is the difference between a silk pillowcase and a satin pillowcase?
This is one of the most common points of confusion in bedding. Satin is a weave structure, not a fibre – satin pillowcases are almost always made from polyester, which is a synthetic, plastic-derived material. Silk is a natural protein fibre. Polyester satin traps heat, does not breathe, and lacks the amino acid proteins that give real silk its hair and skin benefits. Mulberry silk is naturally temperature-regulating, naturally hypoallergenic, and genuinely smooth at a molecular level. Jass London pillowcases are 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk charmeuse – no synthetics, no shortcuts.
How do you wash a silk pillowcase?
Hand washing is ideal but not strictly necessary. You can machine wash Jass London silk on a silk or delicate cycle at 30°C, inside a mesh laundry bag. Use a gentle, pH-neutral detergent such as Woolite or a dedicated silk wash – never standard biological detergent, bleach or fabric softener, as these break down silk's natural proteins. Do not wring or tumble dry. Lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight. If ironing, use the lowest silk setting while slightly damp and iron on the reverse side. With this routine, your pillowcase will hold its lustre and softness for years.
How long does a natural silk pillowcase last?
With correct care, Jass London silk pillowcases and cushion covers typically last two to three years of regular use. Because we use Grade 6A mulberry silk woven at 16.5 momme, the fabric is denser and more resilient than lighter-weight silk products. Many customers with repeat orders report their original pieces still looking and feeling beautiful after three years. The key factors are washing at 30°C or below, avoiding harsh detergents, and drying away from direct sunlight.
Is mulberry silk hypoallergenic?
Yes. Mulberry silk is naturally hypoallergenic. It is inhospitable to dust mites, mould and fungal growth – three of the most common triggers for night-time allergies, congestion and skin irritation. Unlike down or feather bedding, silk does not harbour these allergens. It is also a naturally breathable, temperature-regulating fibre that does not create the warm, moist environment allergens thrive in. For people with sensitive skin, eczema or allergies, a Jass London Grade 6A mulberry silk pillowcase is one of the most beneficial choices for overnight bedding.
Is charmeuse silk the same as mulberry silk?
Not exactly – they describe different things. Mulberry silk refers to the origin of the fibre: it is produced by silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, resulting in the finest, most consistentsilk available. Charmeuse refers to the weave structure: a satin-type weave that produces a smooth, lustrous face and a matte underside. Jass London pillowcases and cushion covers are made from Grade 6A mulberry silk woven in a charmeuse structure – you get both the highest-quality fibre and the smoothest, most skin-friendly surface.
Can I put a silk pillowcase in the washing machine?
Yes, you can machine wash Jass London silk pillowcases. Use a silk or delicate cycle at 30°C, place the pillowcase inside a mesh laundry bag, and use a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid biological detergents, bleach and fabric softener. Do not spin at high speed. After washing, remove promptly and lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight – never tumble dry. Following this routine means you can wash your silk regularly without compromising the fabric's quality or longevity.
Does a silk pillowcase help with hair frizz?
Yes, and it is one of the most immediate benefits customers notice. Frizz is largely caused by friction: as hair moves against a rough cotton surface during sleep, the outer cuticle layer of each strand is roughed up, causing frizz and flyaways by morning. The ultra-smooth surface of Grade 6A mulberry silk charmeuse creates minimal friction, leaving the hair cuticle intact overnight. Customers with naturally curly, wavy or frizz-prone hair typically notice a significant reduction in morning frizz within the first week of switching to a Jass London silk pillowcase.
Is a silk cushion cover worth it?
For two reasons, yes. The practical one: silk cushion covers hold their shape, colour and lustre far longer than cotton or polyester alternatives. They are cool to the touch year-round and feel genuinely different to any other fabric. The aesthetic one: the natural light-reflecting quality of Grade 6A mulberry silk charmeuse elevates the look of a sofa, bed or reading chair in a way no synthetic can replicate. Customers who buy one Jass London cushion cover almost always return for more – not because the first wore out, but because they want the look throughout the room.
